Cheerleading Flu

Neither the Grand Champ medal or First Place Trophy made Rachel as happy as meeting World Cup Shooting Star Kelsey Rule.

Is it already Thursday? My voice is still hoarse but I assure you I’m not the only Cheer Mom, or Cheer Dad for that matter, who is still suffering from the Cheerleading Flu (what the Comp Hangover becomes after more than one day).

This week, a couple of cheer parents, have legitimate illnesses: bronchitis, sinus infections and mere colds. But most of us are just tired and trying to recover from last weekend’s travel weekend.

ShowStoppers Y2 First Place, Level 2 Grand Champs

Like our cheerleaders, during competition season cheer moms and cheer dads need to get into peak condition. We are the ones, the life coaches/early morning motivators who get kids up early and ready for morning check-ins or contain their energy to make it to late-night awards.

We take our vitamins, get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids -at $3  a bottle in those huge arenas that suck all the moisture out of the place.

These are mere annoyances while they are happening as the excitement of the weekend keeps everyone going.

PRO National Champs: Abbie and Tyler of The Pros with ShowStoppers Abbi, Faith, Holly and Rachel

Last weekend’s Athletic Championships Nationals was especially fun and our cheer moms and cheer dads were over the top with spirited-sign-carrying-VIP-seating-overcrowded-support. My daughters’ teams did great: Rachel’s ShowStoppers Youth 2 won Grand Champs of their division and Coach Becky’s mini 1 team came in first place; and three other PROathletics teams also came in first place: Divas-Small Jr. 3; SuperStars- Small Senior All Girl 4; and The Pros-Large Senior Coed 5.

ShowStoppers and coaches celebrate.

And the cheer moms and cheer dads, CHEERMaDs from our gym, didn’t even have to fly to this competition like we will be in a couple of weeks when we go to Atlanta and Dallas. That’s when we’ll have back-to-back-to-back comps: Spirit Cheer’s Beast of the East in Hartford, followed by CheerSport, followed by NCA-Dallas.

By that time our cheer tolerance should be well conditioned, and if it isn’t we’ll be soaring on the sheer adrenaline of the experience.

At least this Saturday and Sunday is a “Down Weekend” and will give us one more week to get over the Cheerleading Flu.
